How to choose the right Google Business Profile categories

Why your primary and secondary categories decide whether your business shows up in the right local searches, and how to pick them without guesswork.

One small choice in your Google Business Profile settings has an impact that’s routinely underestimated: your category directly determines which search queries your profile can appear in at all. The wrong category means you’re absent from the places where customers are actually looking.

Why the category matters so much

Your Google Business Profile category is one of the main signals the system uses to decide which search queries your profile is relevant to. If you’re a veterinary clinic but you’ve chosen the generic category “Pet care service” instead of the more precise “Veterinarian”, you can lose visibility in exactly the searches where people are looking for a vet.

Primary and secondary categories

Google lets you choose one primary category and several secondary ones. The primary category carries the most weight, so it needs to match your core activity as closely as possible — not the option that sounds more prestigious, but the one that most accurately describes what you actually do day to day.

Secondary categories let you cover the other services you genuinely provide. A dental clinic, for instance, can add “Cosmetic dentist” or “Pediatric dentist” alongside its primary “Dental clinic” category, provided it really offers those services.

The most common mistakes when choosing a category

  • A category that’s too broad. “Health care service” instead of “Dental clinic” loses precision.
  • Too many secondary categories that don’t match the real business. This can mislead both the algorithm and customers who arrive with the wrong expectations.
  • Copying a competitor’s category without checking whether it accurately matches your own services.
  • Never revisiting the category as the business expands or changes direction.

How to choose the right category in practice

  1. In your Google Business Profile settings, start typing your main activity and review every suggestion that comes up — there are usually more options than you’d expect at first glance.
  2. Choose the most specific category that accurately describes what you do day to day.
  3. Check which categories similar, highly visible competitors in your city are using — this can surface a more precise option you wouldn’t have thought of.
  4. Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely and consistently provide.

Your category and your website content need to match

If your Google Business Profile lists the category “Veterinarian” but your website barely mentions it and focuses mostly on, say, pet food products, you end up with a mismatch between profile and website content. Consistency between these two sources strengthens the overall local SEO signal — there’s more on this in the main article, Google Business Profile optimization from A to Z.

When it’s worth revisiting your category

If you’ve expanded your services over the past year, changed your specialization, or noticed that your profile isn’t showing up in searches where you’d expect to see it, it’s worth going back and reviewing whether your current category still describes your business most accurately.
