Google Business Profile Posts: how to use them consistently
What Google Business Profile Posts are, what content is worth publishing there, and how regular posts keep your profile active in local search.
Plenty of business owners don’t even realize that Google Business Profile has its own social-media-style publishing feature, known as Posts. It lets you publish news, promotions and reminders directly on your profile, where they’re seen by everyone who opens it in search or on the map.
What Google Business Profile Posts are
Posts are short updates, with or without an image, shown directly on your Google Business Profile. They come in several types: news (What’s New), an offer (Offer), an event (Event) or a product (Product). Each post can include text, a photo and a call-to-action button (for example, “Learn more” or “Book”).
Why it pays to use them regularly
First, this is a direct communication channel to people who are already looking at your profile — they see the latest information without any extra effort on their part. Second, regular posts signal to Google’s algorithm that the profile is actively maintained rather than abandoned, which indirectly contributes to its overall credibility.
What kind of content is worth publishing
- News about changes to your opening hours (holidays, temporary closures).
- Seasonal reminders — for a veterinary clinic, a reminder about annual vaccinations; for a garage, about switching to winter tires.
- New services or equipment you’ve started using.
- Real customer outcomes or snippets from reviews (with permission).
- Short, useful tips related to your field.
What to avoid
Avoid a purely promotional, hard-selling tone in every single post — it wears the reader out fast. It’s also not a good idea to copy the same content you’re already publishing on social media without adapting it: the Google Business Profile audience often has a different intent (actively looking for a service right now) than your social media followers.
How often to publish
A useful practical benchmark is at least one post every two weeks. By default, Google Posts content stays visible for a limited time (typically around a week for standard posts), so consistency matters more than a one-off burst of activity.
How posts fit into your overall profile strategy
Posts are one of several maintenance activities that together make up a healthy, active Google Business Profile — alongside review management and refreshing your photos. Do posts directly affect SEO rankings?
A direct effect on rankings hasn’t been conclusively proven, but regular activity is part of the overall credibility signal for a profile, and the posts themselves directly increase visibility and engagement with the people already viewing it.
How long does it take to write a good post?
One short, well-considered post takes about five to ten minutes, assuming you already have a photo and a clear idea of what you want to say.
Does every post need a new photo?
Not necessarily, though posts with a photo generally attract more attention than text-only ones.
