What GEO optimization is and how it differs from SEO
What GEO (generative engine optimization) is, why more people look for answers through AI chat systems, and what that means for a small business site.
Only a few years ago, search meant one thing: typing a phrase into Google and scanning a list of links. Today, more and more people put the same question straight to an AI chat window and get one summarized answer — often without opening a single website. That shift is precisely why GEO exists.
What GEO is
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — means adapting your website content so that AI systems (such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search or other generative assistants) can understand it, interpret it correctly and cite it in their answers.
Unlike conventional search, where your goal is to appear in a list of links, the goal of GEO is to become a source that an AI system draws on when composing its answer. Sometimes your site will be mentioned directly or linked as a source; sometimes your information will simply shape the content of the answer without an explicit citation.
How GEO differs from SEO
SEO and GEO aren’t competing strategies — they complement each other. SEO optimizes your visibility in traditional search results: link listings and map results. GEO optimizes your visibility where the search engine generates an answer itself instead of just showing a list of links.
In practice, this means solid technical SEO fundamentals (a clear structure, a fast site, structured data) remain necessary in a GEO context too — AI systems also draw on search indexes and technical signals. They simply add another layer on top: how clearly, accurately and consistently structured your information is, so that it’s easy for a machine to “understand”, not just a human.
Why this already matters for small businesses, not just big brands
It might seem as though AI search is a distant prospect, or something only large companies need to worry about. In reality, people are already asking AI assistants the questions that would once have been Google queries: “What’s a good veterinary clinic in Kaunas that’s open on Saturdays?” or “How much does a dental implant cost in Vilnius?” If those answers aren’t clearly and factually present on your website, the AI system simply won’t mention your business — even if it genuinely fits the need.
How AI systems decide what to mention
In short, they look for clarity, structure and credibility. For a closer look at the specific signals that shape this process, read How AI search engines choose their sources.
Practical steps to start with
- Write in clear, direct answers. If an article or page answers a specific question, put the answer in the first or second sentence after the heading — not after three paragraphs of preamble.
- Use structured data (schema.org). This lets machines understand exactly what your content is — a service, an article, an FAQ or a review. More in Structured data (schema.org) and why it matters for GEO.
- Be factually accurate and up to date. AI systems avoid citing sources where the information looks outdated or contradictory.
- Build FAQ sections. The question-and-answer format naturally matches the way AI systems construct their own answers.
GEO and AEO — related, but not the same
GEO often comes up alongside AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — optimizing for voice assistants and direct answers. The two overlap, but AEO is more focused on short, direct answers (a voice assistant’s response to a single question, for instance), while GEO addresses broader, generative answers with context. More in AEO: how to optimize your website for voice search and direct answers.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Local SEO fundamentals — your Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, local keywords (see What local SEO is and why it matters for small businesses) — remain relevant, because most people still use conventional search for everyday, transactional needs such as finding a specific address or checking opening hours. GEO simply adds a new layer of visibility, and it’s no longer one worth ignoring.
